Finnish-born Lukala brings a personal project surrounding the local waters, open water swimming, water pollution, bearing witness & loss.
Lukala’s two images show the local mudflats, that form an important role in reducing carbon, it is called Blue Carbon, which refers specifically to carbon that is captured and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. Its role in climate change mitigation has been recognised globally, with vegetated aquatic ecosystems such as tidal marshes, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests sequestering and storing more carbon (per unit area) than terrestrial forests. Sediments have been found to store carbon 10 times more rapidly than terrestrial sediments and, if undisturbed, can store this carbon for thousands of years (National Ocean Service 2020)’.
Tidal mudflats, salt marshes, and seagrasses are being lost 1-2% per year globally to sea levels rising. So, for most of us, this is just the normal view of our beautiful estuary, but it has got such an important role in our challenges against climate change, and we need to look after it and leave it undisturbed.
